Charleston HIstorical Art, Dude!—or CHAD—was produced in 2006 at the invitation of the urban design firm Keane & Co. in Charleston, South Carolina. The exhibit consisted of three parts: a series of approximately 25 drawings; a pair of photo composites measuring 50 feet by 4 inches that reproduced the west and east facades of a 1.3 mile stretch of King Street from Broad Street to King Street; and this series of photographic interpretations of key figures from Charleston's history. Additional graphic design and branding components were developed for the exhibition, including a logo, large sign, stickers and t-shirts.
This series features model Atom who I was working with in 2006 on an extended fashion photography-styled project Atomlook, and generally borrows from the style of that work. I chose a number of white male figures from a brief indoctrination to Charleston's history achieved by reading an entertaining overview of its history, "A Short History of Charleston" by Robert Rosen, with additional information from "Charleston! Charleston!: The History of a Southern City" by Walter J. Fraser, Jr.
Beginning with the founding of the town in its current location and ending with its current mayor, Atom is posed in many historically accurate or significantly relevant locations with contemporary clothing and props. Eight of the works as exhibited were large scale at 60 x 48 inches on vinyl banner material with corner grommets, each print including a photo border of an ornate frame and accompanied by a small 9 inch wide plaque printed on vinyl and mounted on corrugated plastic sign material.
The exhibit was presented at Keane & Co.'s offices on King Street in October 2006. In addition to the exhibition, two other events were conducted for CHAD: a booth at the Charleston City Market seeking attendees' suggestions for the future of Charleston in May 2006, and a panel discussion about the future of Charleston with the artist and urban design professionals in October 2006.
Selections from CHAD have also been exhibited in Athens, Georgia at the Lyndon House Arts Center Annual Juried Exhibition in 2009 (honorable mention), at an Athens Design Development group show at Cine in 2009, at a Brick House Studio group show in 2008, and as a solo exhibit at White Tiger Gourmet in 2009.
Prints are in edition of five, pricing upon request.
